The GWM Ute scores a full five-star ANCAP rating that is up to date with the latest 2021 testing criteria, but only for August 1, 2021 build dates.

Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has awarded the new GWM Ute a full five-star safety rating. The testing was performed in ANCAP locally to the latest 2020-2022 protocols.

Helping it achieve full marks was a comprehensive active safety suite from the base model up and a centre airbag that minimises occupant collision in the far-side impact test. While some utes have been awarded a five-star ANCAP rating without a centre airbag, it is because the rating was performed before the test was introduced (such is the way ANCAP’s carry-over scoring works from previous years) or if there is enough shoulder room between the front occupants to minimises collision.

Overall, the GWM Ute performed well across all tests (results below).

IMPORTANT NOTE FROM ANCAP: Initial ANCAP test results obtained through the full width frontal test and dynamic whiplash test identified deficiencies with the design of front head restraint and steering column components on vehicles built between September 2020 and July 2021. GWM subsequently introduced production changes to these components (vehicles built from 1 August 2021) and re-tests conducted by ANCAP confirmed improved performance.

GWM has confirmed affected components on vehicles already in-service (vehicles built between September 2020 and July 2021) will be replaced with the improved designs through targeted rectification action (service campaign) initiated from November 2021. This 5 star ANCAP safety rating will apply to vehicles built before 1 August 2021 once the rectification action is complete.

Vehicles built prior to 1 August 2021 ( VIN number of LGWDCF195MJ623792 or later) without the service action complete are unrated.

“GWM has shown its willingness and strong commitment to providing its customers with the highest levels of safety by swiftly incorporating improvements to address deficiencies in existing vehicles and as a result, Australian and New Zealand consumers are being supplied with a safer vehicle,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Carla Hoorweg.
