A small selection of visual and technological updates for the six-cylinder 53 and 43 variants of the AMG GT 4-door have been announced by Mercedes.
Mercedes-AMG has given its GT 4-Door a small facelift for 2021. The changes are limited at present to six-cylinder versions of the brand’s Porsche Panamera rival (GT 53 and GT 43 cars), so don’t include the V8 powered GT 63 and 63 S versions.
The updates extend mainly to three new exterior colour and wheel options with no changes to the surfacing or bodywork. But the six-cylinder GT 4-Door cars are now also available with what’s called the V8 Styling Pack. This introduces the bodykit and trim of the 63 badged V8 models to the GT 53 4MATIC+, GT 43 4MATIC+ and rear-wheel-drive GT 43 cars.
There’s also a new design package called AMG Night Package II. This introduces a dark chrome effect for the vertical slats on the grille, and black badging all around. It can be combined with the Carbon Fibre Package, which introduces carbon trim elements. Similarly, the interior of the GT 53 and 43 models is available with new trim, wood and leather, and is now equipped with the brand’s new twin-spoke design steering wheel.
The updates aren’t just visual, however. Mercedes says it has reconfigured the GT 4-Door’s adaptive air suspension with a new damping system and control unit, providing a greater spread of comfort and body control between the GT 4-Door’s various drive mode selections.
The 63 variants will receive a similar selection of trim updates and the new steering wheel and suspension later in the year too, and Mercedes-AMG has also promised that we’ll also see the first E Performance plug-in hybrid version of the car soon.
The E Performance plug-in hybrid powertrain mates a battery and motor system to the turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine of the GT 63, for a total power output of 600kW and 1000Nm of torque. Tipped to be badged GT 73e, it will give the AMG GT 4-Door line-up a Panamera S E-Hybrid rivalling model capable of all-electric running.
