All-new Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 is expected to share powertrains with redesigned C-Class.
Our spy photographers have spotted the all-new Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 undergoing winter testing in Sweden, ahead of its scheduled launch in 2023.
With rumours indicating that Mercedes may ditch the C-Class Cabriolet, this new drop-top model looks to bridge the small gap between the C-Class and E-Class convertibles, and will sit at the top of the upcoming CLE range.
Taking note of its bulging wings, larger air intake and what appears to be a reduced ride height, we believe that this is the performance-focused CLE 63 model. It also sports a temporary dual-exhaust system, unlike on previous prototypes where the tips weren’t visible. In terms of electrification, there doesn’t appear to be a visible charging port, however one could be hidden beneath the camouflaged body.
Despite the new CLE using the flexible MRA-2 platform (that underpins both the C-Class and S-Class models) and being able to accommodate a six-cylinder engine, it is likely the CLE 63 will have the same hybridised turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine as the upcoming Mercedes-AMG C 63.
This engine is mated to a 6.1kWh battery pack and a rear-mounted electric motor that produces up to 150kW. This set-up will allow for power outputs in excess of 475kW, although expect it to boast similar power to the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible’s 375kW.
