Cupra is set to shake up the electric hatchback scene with the introduction of the Cupra Born VZ, a high-performance variant boasting substantial power and chassis enhancements.
The headline power figure stands at 321 kW, generated by a rear-mounted motor, signaling a significant boost from its predecessor. Accompanying this power surge is a substantial torque increase to 545 Nm, promising an impressive on-road performance, evident in its 5.7-second 0-100km/h time.
The increased performance is attributed to a new electric motor and inverter system shared with other updated MEB-platform models from Audi and Skoda. The model features a new 79 kWh battery pack with a peak DC fast charging capability of 170 kW.
Cupra has taken measures to enhance the Born’s chassis, incorporating revised spring and damper rates, new anti-roll bars, and adaptive dampers that adjust firmness based on the selected driver mode. Visually, the Born VZ maintains its distinctive appearance, with the option of new exterior paint colors and a set of slightly wider 20-inch wheels.
Inside, the Born VZ receives upgraded bucket seats, featuring aggressively sculpted bolsters and unique leather and Dynamica upholstery. The steering wheel now includes paddles for adjusting through three levels of regenerative braking. The dashboard is equipped with a new full-width LED lighting element, serving both as ambient lighting and a functional indicator for potential hazards and charge level when plugged in.
The Cupra Born VZ is expected to hit the market later this year, with prices starting above the existing top-spec VZ3. While it faces competition from high-powered rivals like the MG4 XPower, Volvo EX30 Twin Motor, and Smart #1 Brabus, Cupra aims to establish itself as a true electric alternative to traditional hot hatchbacks.
