The updated 2024 Porsche 911 992.2 is expected to offer a hybrid powertrain for the first time.

Porsche is cold weather testing the upcoming second-generation 992 series 911 Carrera ahead of its debut later this year. As with all modern 911s, the second-gen update will introduce changes to its powertrain, as well as technology improvements and a gentle styling make-over. Porsche is also expected to introduce a hybrid powertrain for the first time in a 911.

The hybrid system will be integrated into the existing flat-six engine, made possible due to the 992 designed from the outset to be compatible with an electrified powertrain. Initially the idea of an electrified 911 was cancelled before the 992 was launched, but Porsche has decided to revisit the concept for the model’s midlife update.

Porsche will use mild-hybrid technology rather than go down the plug-in route, with a battery positioned ahead of the flat-six engine and between the rear seat bulkhead. The electric motor will be positioned between the car’s existing eight-speed PDK with electric drive expect to be sent to just the front axle.

Conventional midlife cycle updates will be applied, with a design change made front and rear bumpers to accommodate the cooling requirements for the hybrid system. A new design of LED head and tail lights will also debut.

Bolder design changes will be required around the engine cover, again to aid cooling, which will result in design tweaks required for the existing single-piece light bar.

Expect to see the gen-2 992 later in 2023, four years after the original’s launch with a 911 Turbo hybrid potentially arriving in 2024.
