It’s 27 years since the tragic death of Ayrton Senna, and despite the brilliance of Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton in those years (winning 14 of the available 27 titles in that time), many still consider the Brazilian ace the greatest driver of them all. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Senna’s third and final World Championship, TAG Heuer has released the Formula 1 Senna Special Edition 2021 timepiece.
Senna became a TAG Heuer ambassador in 1988, the year that he won his first Formula 1 World Championship (a title that he defended the following year). Since his death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, TAG Heuer has continued to work with the Senna Foundation and it’s through this on-going relationship that the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition launches to celebrate the achievements of the driving god.
The 43mm case and screw-down crown at 3 o’clock are both fashioned in steel with a sand-blasted, black Diamond-Like Coating (DLC). The case is topped by a fixed ceramic bezel with tachymeter scale and features the word ‘Senna’ along with the stylised ‘S’ that is synonymous with Ayrton.
Yellow, another of Senna’s trademarks, also features prominently on the new timepiece. The inner rim of the bezel features an elegant circle of yellow, while the anthracite sunray-brushed dial also features the sunny hue on it sub-dials. Again, ‘S’ and ‘Senna’ appear on the dial in yellow. The three counters are the permanent second indicator at 3 o’clock; the counter at 6 o’clock is the hour chronograph counter and 1/10th of a second chronograph counter; and the minute counter at 9 o’clock. All three counters feature rhodium-plated hands.
The three main hands are black gold-plated, with the hour and minute hands topped with Super-LumiNova for excellent low-light legibility.
Flip over the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna 2021 and you’re greeted by a stainless-steel screw-down caseback that depicts Senna’s iconic racing helmet, along with the inscription “Senna Special Edition”.
Only given away by the yellow stitching, the black calfskin strap creates an optical illusion with its embossed S Link pattern that mimics a steel bracelet. Lined in black, the strap is secured with TAG Heuer’s double-folding clasp and double safety push buttons.
The Formula 1 Senna Special Edition 2021 is powered by a quartz movement and is water resistant to 200 metres.
