Fisker’s revival will continue with a striking drop-top grand tourer with hypercar performance and almost 1000km range.
As the all-electric era draws near, new car brands are emerging to capitalise on this seismic shift in technology, but Fisker is a familiar name. Led by former Aston Martin designer Henrik Fisker, the California-based firm already dipped its toes in the premium EV segment with the Karma GT car in 2012, and now, it’s re-entering the space with this: the Ronin.
Conceived as part of a product plan that will see Fisker offering a five-strong line-up of EVs by 2026, the Ronin is a four-door electric grand tourer with seating for five and cutting edge powertrain technology, with three electric motors generating over 750kW.
Exact performance figures haven’t been announced yet, but with carbonfibre body panels and that enormous power output, the Ronin is expected to complete the 0-100km/h sprint in as little as 2sec. Even more impressive is that Fisker is targeting a range of over 965km for the new EV in order to fulfil its brief as a true GT car. This is made possible by a new battery construction which integrates its cells into the structure of the body.
The Ronin’s design is just as space-age as the projected specs, with a smooth, shrink-wrapped body shell and a folding hard-top roof for open-air motoring – unheard of in this segment. Its four doors swing upwards with butterfly hinges to provide access to the cabin, which hasn’t yet been revealed but promises a ‘high-tech luxurious’ design.
Given that the Ronin is being built to showcase the full might of Fisker’s design and engineering capabilities, it won’t come cheap; the brand says it will be produced in limited quantities with an ‘ultra-luxury’ price tag. The Ronin will be sold alongside the Ocean SUV which is currently being produced by Austrian manufacturing company Magna Steyr, as well as a forthcoming Pear SUV and an electric pick-up truck called the Alaska.
