GWM sub-brand Tank has revealed a new 4×4 to rival the likes of the Toyota LandCruiser Prado.
Chinese carmaker GWM showed Australian media earlier this year a new sub-brand called Tank that is under consideration locally. On the cards for now is the Tank 300, the smallest of the brand’s four-wheel drives and one that takes clear influence from the likes of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen. However, this latest model, the Tank 600, could also be a candidate for Australia.
The Tank 600 is a traditional body-on-frame four-wheel drive that is dimensionally similar to the Prado at 5050mm long, 1934mm wide and 1905mm tall. The wheelbase measures 2850mm long. That makes it bigger than the Tank 300, slightly larger than the Prado but below the Tank 700 which is a performance luxury focused four-wheel drive with a powerful hybrid turbo V6 engine.
Images show a boxy wagon with plenty of chrome and a huge, single-piece grille. The headlights are squarish LEDs and the taillights sit vertically. While styling is subjective the engine may be the turning point for some as it is detailed with a 3.0-litre V6 turbo petrol engine producing 260kW of power and 500Nm of torque through a nine-speed automatic.
While the lack of diesel will be a concern for some, Tank also has four-cylinder diesel turbo engines in its stable to choose from.
The new Tank 600 will be officially unveiled at the Chengdu Motor Show from August 27 to September 5 before its on-sale in China later this year. GWM Australia is yet to confirm plans for the model at this stage.
