Hyundai has released details on its forthcoming entry-level SUV, called the Bayon. It’s due to reach the European market in the first half of 2021, with sales expected to start in the latter half of the year.
Some may note that Hyundai already has a entry-level SUV in its range called the Kona. But, from what we understand, the Bayon – named after the city of Bayonne in southwest France – is designed to sit below this model, acting as a cheaper alternative to the Nissan Juke.
For now, the only image we have of the Bayon is this shadowy teaser, which previews the SUV’s tailgate and rear light design. Given its size, we expect the Bayon will share its platform and powertrain range with the latest i20. The hatchback’s petrol-only line-up consists of an 62kW 1.2-litre four-cylinder unit and a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder mild-hybrid unit, with either 74kW or 88kW.
Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Hyundai’s Vice President of Marketing, said: “Hyundai is strongly established in the European SUV market already, in terms of our model range as well as our sales success.
“By launching a new, additional B-segment model as the entry point into our SUV line-up, we see a great opportunity to cover European customers’ demand even better and to increase our offering in a highly popular segment.”
Hyundai Australia already offers the Venue and it is unlikely the Bayon will arrive here.
