New Kia EV2 will be ‘affordable’ electric car

Kia is rapidly expanding its line up of EVs with a small hatch next on the cards.

Kia’s EV DAY in Korea saw the launch of concept versions of the upcoming EV3 and EV4 but something smaller was also mentioned – a supermini-sized electric car called the EV2.

The Korean firm has previously filed a trademark to name its electric cars EV1 all the way up to EV9, so we could see an even smaller model sit underneath the EV2, eventually. We expect the EV2 to be priced around $40,000 when it arrives by 2027.

That price point would make it a rival for the upcoming Renault 5 and BYD Dolphin at the lower end of the all-electric market. To help keep production costs down, the EV2 should utilise the same E-GMP architecture that’ll feature on the EV3 and EV4. This would mean it won’t be able to support ultra-fast charging due to its 400V system.

There’s also the scope for both single-motor and dual-motor powertrains. If the latter layout does feature on the EV2, it could be reserved for the hot ‘EV2 GT’ model.

Kia currently builds the Ceed and Sportage at its plant in Slovakia but earlier this year the firm announced that small electric Kia’s would be built in Europe too – with the EV2 being one of these.

The EV2 should be previewed in the next few years by a concept version. That would put it on a similar launch timeline to that of the EV9, EV4 and EV5 which were also previewed by near-production concepts.
