Smart EV Range: Prices and specs announced for Australia
Smart is back in Australia, with the Smart #1 SUV priced from $54,900 and the bigger Smart #3 SUV kicking off from #57,990.
Not seen here since 2015, when parent Mercedes-Benz decided an Australian business case could no longer be made to stack up, Smart’s absence meant we missed out on the Renault Twingo-based third-generation ForTwo and ForFour city cars.
The last time we saw Smart here, buyers could get into a Mitsubishi Colt-based ForTwo from just under $20K, but its return with bigger and more practical EVs will see prices more than double.
This time, Smart is now operated as a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Chinese giant Geely, but the brand’s new Australian retailer LSH Auto has made a point of the line’s “German-designed and engineered” credentials.

The new Smart range, launching from September, will debut with a pair of not-so-small electric SUVs.
Opening the range is the Smart #1 five-door “urban crossover” and the Smart #3 “crossover coupe”, with both models available in Pro+, Premium and familiar Brabus versions.
The #1 is Smart’s first new model under its Mercedes-Geely parentage, having debuted in 2022, while the slightly longer and more lifestyle-oriented #3 appeared a year later.
Smart #1 & #3 basic dimensions
Model | Wheelbase | Length |
---|---|---|
Smart #1 | 2,750mm | 4,270mm |
Smart #3 | 2,785mm | 4,440mm |
As a point of comparison, the new Volvo EX30 has a much shorter wheelbase and length at 2,650mm and 4,233mm respectively. The popular and affordable MG4 is closer at 2,705mm/4,287mm, while the Volkswagen ID.3 – still not available in Australia – lists figures of 2,770mm and 4,262mm respectively.
There’s no #2 in the line-up yet, but the brand is understood to be preparing that model as a two-seater ForTwo successor to launch sometime in 2024.
A much larger Smart #5 has also been previewed, debuting in April as an offroad-inspired concept at the Beijing Motor Show.

Battery & driving range
Smart has not yet confirmed battery capacity or driving range for its Australian line-up.
In Europe, buyers have 49kWh (47 usable) and 66kWh (62 usable) options, and the power figures below suggesting regular #1 Australian models will be packing the 49kWh and 66kWh battery systems for regular and long-range driving, while the dual-motor Brabus will get the 66kWh battery only.
This arrangement should result in a driving range of 310km for the 49kWh RWD Pro+ model, 440km for the 66kWh RWD Premium model and 400km for the 66kWh AWD Brabus model.
It’s possible, however – or even likely – that Australian models will forego the smaller battery pack to keep range anxiety out of the conversation.

Availability
Launching in September, the six-vehicle Smart line-up will be available exclusively through LSH Auto Australia’s Mercedes-Benz locations in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.
Although not described in its media announcement, the new Smart models are currently produced in China. The company is understood to be exploring European production options to overcome tariffs recently applied to Chinese-made cars, but this is unlikely to affect Australian sourcing.
