A ‘two-way conversation’ will soon be possible with your new Volkswagen.

Volkswagen is gearing up to enhance its ChatGPT-based voice assistance software with a forthcoming ‘level 2’ software update, promising a more interactive experience for users. The current system relies on users providing commands to the AI chatbot, but the upcoming version aims to enable a two-way conversation, allowing the car to offer more comprehensive information and engage in back-and-forth exchanges with users.

Luis Medinas, Project Manager for Volkswagen’s infotainment development, revealed that the updated ChatGPT system, referred to as ‘level 2’, could make its debut in new cars later this year. Existing VW models equipped with VW’s Software 4.0, limited to certain ID.4 and ID.5 models, will also have access to the new technology.

The initial announcement of the ChatGPT technology took place at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas earlier this year. The new-generation infotainment systems in models such as ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, Tiguan, and the facelifted Golf are expected to incorporate ChatGPT. This feature can be integrated into Volkswagen’s IDA voice assistant, activated by saying “Hello IDA” or pressing a button on the steering wheel.

The planned updates will eliminate the need to say “Hello IDA,” and the system will offer web links for additional information in response to user questions. The integration of ChatGPT into IDA allows for voice operation of infotainment, navigation, and air conditioning, as well as answering general knowledge questions.

Volkswagen’s collaboration with Cerence Inc. enables access to a constantly growing artificial intelligence database. The system will evolve to respond to various questions using intuitive language. In cases where Volkswagen’s system cannot provide an answer or control a function, the query will seamlessly transition to AI for a response, with the familiar Volkswagen voice delivering the answer. Importantly, all questions and answers are promptly deleted, and ChatGPT has no access to vehicle data.

While Volkswagen aims to make this technology a standard feature in vehicles, there have been some challenges observed in its functionality. In demonstrations, ChatGPT struggled to understand certain questions and occasionally failed to provide accurate responses. Nevertheless, with ongoing updates and refinements, Volkswagen hopes to improve the system’s performance and make it a standout feature in its vehicle lineup.
