The Chery Omoda E5 electric SUV is now on sale in Australia, entering with a sharp starting price that puts it in close contention with popular models like the MG 4, BYD Dolphin and GWM Ora.

Pricing starts at $42,990 for the Omoda E5 BX and $45,990 for the Omoda E5 EX, both before on-road costs. The regular petrol-powered Omoda 5 launched in Australia last year, priced from just under $30K.

By comparison, the MG4 is priced from $39,990, the Dolphin from $38,890 and the Ora from a sharp $35,990.

While the Omoda E5 is the priciest offering in its set, the company’s local arm has said it isn’t looking to compete on any race to the bottom.

“Chery has never really been about providing cheap cars, and we’re certainly not interested in being cheap and cheerful,” local boss Lucas Harris told WhichCar in March.

“For us. It’s really about making sure that what we’re doing is good value.”

Powertrain and performance

  • 150kW/340Nm electric motor
  • 61kWh LFP battery pack
  • 430km range, 110kW charging
  • 30-80% in under 30 minutes

In both trims, the Omoda E5 is driven by a single electric motor that produces 150kW of power and 340Nm of torque, sending drive to the front wheels. Energy is provided by a 61kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack.

Chery claims the Omoda E5 will offer a driving range of 430 kilometres (WLTP), with efficiency rated at 15.5kWh/100km.

Battery charging time for a 30 to 80% ‘fill’ is claimed to complete in “less than” 30 minutes from a DC fast charger, at up to 110kW.

The Omoda E5 claims a 0-100km/h time of 7.6 seconds, leaving it well behind on any ladder of quick EVs.
