The third and biggest new Smart model, the 2025 Smart #5, brings a boxy and offroad-inspired look to the range
Unveiled in Sydney, Australia, Smart has today introduced the all-new #5 electric SUV – positioning it within the increasingly competitive mid-size SUV market.
Expected to launch in Australia in the second half of 2025, the Smart #5 is the largest in the brand’s line-up, designed with practicality as its core selling point.
At 4705mm long, the 2025 Smart #5 outstretches popular segment options like the Skoda Enyaq and Tesla Model Y by around 50mm. Its 2900mm wheelbase also betters both models, by 135mm and 10mm respectively.
Mercedes-Benz and ownership partner Geely have shaped the 2025 Smart #5 with a boxy, rugged appearance that distinguishes it from the smaller Smart #1 and #3.
For those bold enough to seek adventure in an EV, the Smart #5 Summit Edition includes an off-road package with a roof-mounted light bar, roof rack, side steps, a storage box, and an access ladder.
“The #5 is a very special project for us. It represents a new era in smart’s commitment to premium design, going beyond boundaries and keeping an open mind,” said Kai Sieber, Mercedes-Benz Design, Head of Smart Design.
“We stay true to our design philosophy of ‘Love, Pure and Unexpected’ – elevating the meaning of ‘Pure’ for an honest mid-size SUV design. The boxiness and the wheels in the corners enable the typical smart ‘Body Space Index’.”
Inside, you’ll find a 10.3-inch ultra-HD driver’s display, two 13-inch AMOLED screens for driver and front passenger, and a huge 25.6-inch augmented-reality head-up display.
A generative AI voice assistant is also featured, integrated with the Sennheiser sound system offering over 2000 watts.
The cabin offers 34 storage compartments, and with the rear seats folded down, the cargo space expands to 1530 litres (a seats-up figure hasn’t been offered).
An additional 72-litre storage compartment is available under the bonnet, in the ‘frunk’ (front trunk) position made popular by Tesla.
Detailed technical specifications are still to come, but the Smart #5 is confirmed to pack a 100kWh battery system in its floor, providing a range of more than 740km according to the CLTC test cycle used in China – European WLTP range figures have not yet been disclosed.
The Smart #5 also boasts an 800-volt system architecture to allow for rapid charging, with the battery able to go from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes.
While full performance details are not yet available, leaked documents suggest the Smart #5 will offer various powertrain options, including single-motor models producing 250kW and 288kW, alongside a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version with up to 432kW.
A top-tier variant boasting 475kW is also anticipated.
Will the Smart #5 come to Australia?
