BMW Australia is set to grow its 5 Series sedan range with the introduction of the 540d xDrive variant later this year.
The new 540d xDrive will join the existing 520i in the combustion-engined line-up. The other 5 Series offerings in Australia are fully electric, represented by the i5 eDrive40 and i5 M60 xDrive. BMW will also launch the fully electric i5 M60 xDrive Touring wagon later this year for longroof fans.
The BMW 540d xDrive is driven by a 223 kW and 670 Nm 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder turbo diesel engine, matched to a 48-volt mild hybrid system.
The mild hybrid system serves both as a starter motor and delivering a boost of up to 13 kW and 200 Nm to the engine, while recuperating braking energy to convert into electrical energy.
Combined with all-wheel-drive traction, the 540d xDrive claims a fairly rapid 0-100 km/h time of 5.2 seconds.
